Construction has started on an engineered mass-timber bridge in a remote Ontario community.

The Ontario government, Whitefeather Forest Community Resource Management Authority, Pikangikum First Nation and the Government of Canada have started work on a new permanent bridge over the Berens River. The structure is an innovative engineered mass-timber bridge, the first of its kind used in major transportation infrastructure. It is part of an all-season road that will link six remote First Nations communities.

The primary contractor is M.D. Steele. Preparatory work is ongoing, including mobilisation to the remote site and blasting for aggregates. The bridge will be completed in 2028.
