Michigan State Police said that the collapse of the Townsend Pedestrian Bridge happened at 5.20am today (27 March). The bridge has completely blocked the westbound I-94 near Van Dyke. Nobody was injured.

The section of the bridge over the eastbound carriageway remained in place, but Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has determined the whole bridge will need to be removed.

The eastbound side of the route is being kept open until equipment arrives later today to carry out the removal of both sections of the bridge.
