Lake Havasu City in Arizona, USA, has awarded a contract worth US$7 million to NV5 for engineering design and construction management of a new bridge that will relieve pressure on a structure that was imported from the UK in 1968.
US-based consultants NV5 issued a statement saying that it was pleased to contribute to infrastructure improvements that will support the region’s economic development. The crossing will take traffic over the Bridgewater Channel in Lake Havasu, which is part of the Colorado River.
The State of Arizona allocated funding for the second bridge project worth US$35 million in its 2024 budget.
The developer who founded Lake Havasu City, in the west of Arizona near the border with California, famously purchased a surplus stone bridge from the City of London, dissembled it and shipped it over to the USA. The marked stones were then reassembled and the structure, named London Bridge, still draws tourists.
