More Mexican Bridges
Mexico is due to inaugurate more than 1,500km of new motorway construction in 2000, including the country's longest cross-water bridge. The major project is the 861km Tuxtla Gutierrez-Ocozocoautla-Las Choapas (Veracruz) motorway, which will cut some three hours off travel time between the capital and Mexico's under-developed southern province of Chiapas. This will connect with the new 420km southern border highway currently under construction, with 40km yet to be completed. The Chiapas motorway features Mexico's longest cross-water bridge, the 1.2km crossing of the Nezahualcoyotl dam, as well as three smaller bridges, the Chiapas II (630m), the Grijalva (294m) and Carreño (159m). A new international bridge between Ciudad Hidalgo and Tec'n will also improve motorway access to Guatemala and the rest of Central America.
