New Zealand’s highest suspension bridge has been pronounced unsafe by local authorities after an annual inspection.

Queenstown Lakes District Council closed Skippers Canyon Suspension Bridge after an inspection found wires in the cables had failed. The bridge over Shotover River on South Island is presently closed to all users. At 91.4m above the water, it is the highest in New Zealand. Opened in 1901 for gold mining activities, the remote structure now plays a role in tourism. Queenstown Lakes District Council will consider the structure’s future.
