A major cross-border infrastructure project is moving forward in western Romania, with plans for a new bridge over the Mures River and a bypass to ease traffic through Cenad.
The initiative, branded 'Mures Green Bridge', is being developed under the Interreg VI-A Romania–Hungary 2021–2027 programme, with Timis County Council as lead partner and Csongrád-Csanád County Council on the Hungarian side.
The project aims to create a direct connection between Romania’s DN6 highway and Hungary’s M43 motorway, eliminating the need for long detours via Ortisoara or other border crossings. For freight operators and commuters from the Sânnicolau Mare region, this promises significant time savings and improved regional connectivity.
The proposed crossing will feature a 2km-long bridge with a 14m-wide deck, incorporating pedestrian sidewalks, cycle lanes, and modern lighting. On the Romanian side, a 1km bypass will divert heavy traffic away from Cenad’s village centre, reducing congestion and improving safety.
The project has a total eligible budget of €897,120 (US$980,000), with €699,300 (US$765,000) allocated to Timis County’s activities. Work includes feasibility studies, environmental approvals, and technical documentation in both countries. According to Timis County Council, the contract for the feasibility study is currently under evaluation following a tender launched in late 2025.
Four bidders have submitted offers: Costin si Vlad Birou de Proiectare, Sercotrans, FIP Consulting, and a consortium led by KVB Consulting & Engineering with Civil Engineering Institute Macedonia JSC Skopje. Once awarded, the winning bidder will have 11 months to complete the studies and secure all necessary permits.
Officials emphasise that the new link will strengthen economic ties and support sustainable mobility across the border. The project is scheduled for completion within a 24-month timeframe, with construction expected to follow once design and approvals are finalised.
