A bridge design by Ponting is expected to improve river hydraulics to reduce the risk of flooding in northeast Slovenia.

The 110m road bridge over the Savinja at Polule will have a 65m main span plus two inundation spans and no supports in the water. The flood-damaged bridge it replaces has two ‘feet in the water’. The new bridge, a steel ortho-composite structure, will be 2.7m higher than the existing structure. It will have two motor vehicle lanes separated by an arch, and lanes for pedestrians and cyclists.

The contractor VOC Celje is scheduled to complete the project by the middle of 2026. Funding comes from the Slovenian Water Agency and the country’s recovery and resilience plan.

Another bridge of Ponting design was installed on the same river at the end of last year (link opens in new tab).
