Norway leads way in road improvements
Norway has set up a pilot replacement electronic fare collection system because a change in international frequency regulations has rendered its current system obsolete. The test site is a new bridge at Sykkylven in the north west of the country. AutoPass has been chosen as the replacement system, which will be rolled out nationwide during 2001. By the year-end, more than 10 toll road operators will be implementing the system, with almost one million electronic tags introduced. Norway intends to co-ordinate all its toll systems so that the AutoPASS electronic tag can be used everywhere. It will enable the government to let a single contract nationwide with one toll road operator. The new Norwegian toll technology is based on the proposed European standard for dedicated short-range communication (DSRC).
