The main span of the old Tappan Zee Bridge was cut out and lowered down to a waiting barge during a special operation last month as part of the demolition of the structure.

Tappan Zee Constructors lowered and removed the centre of the old bridge’s main span during a day-long operation, which implemented eight hydraulic strand jacks to lower the 4,750-ton section of steel.

TZC has transported the main span section south of the bridge for further disassembly. TZC will also proceed with more dismantling operations on the main span in the coming weeks.
