Local politicians in Richmond, England, are running a design competition to improve a rail crossing in the area. The competition is open to everyone - members of the public included - and the politicians say that they will work with Network Rail to implement the winning design.
Following local demand, Network Rail agreed to construct a new footbridge over the railway at the level crossing on Manor Road, North Sheen, Richmond. Member of Parliament Zac Goldsmith and local Conservative councillors want the bridge to suit the local community. They emphasise that all designs and ideas are welcome but point out that entrants should also consider railway requirements such as ease of inspection and maintenance. The competition deadline is 22 April.
"I am delighted that Network Rail want to work with us to find a better designed, more inspiring footbridge bridge," said councillor Katharine Harborne. "The community will now get a say in the type of bridge they want - with this competition they can even design it."
Goldsmith and local councillors will host a public meeting in May where residents can vote on a winning design.
