"The elegant structure will be visible over a wide area and will be a genuinely striking gateway into Central Sunderland," says the report. "It is likely to be an attraction in itself as the tallest bridge in the country, providing the city with an impressive landmark."

The bridge consists of two curving steel towers, one of 140m and other of about 190m.

The design by architect Stephen Spence and structural engineer Techniker won a competition in September 2005 but was not unveiled until three years later. Work on the bridge and its approach roads could now start in 2012.
