It is the largest bridge repair project in Canadian history. The bridge was built in 1934 and the deck will be replaced using proven techniques involving the use of precast concrete panels to minimise the project's impact on traffic.

Work has been divided into two separate contracts. The Mohawk Bridge Consortium was awarded the US$64 million first stage in April. This involves strengthening the steel structure and replacement of the reinforced concrete bridge deck on three access ramps. A public tendering process for the second part is due to take place late next year. The second contract will involve replacing the deck using precast concrete panels.
