The design has changed considerably from concepts released last year.
William Fraser Memorial Park on Pohe Island to Port Road will be linked by the bridge. In the years to come, William Fraser Memorial Park on Pohe Island will be turned into one of the country’s largest new urban park developments featuring areas to walk, cycle and enjoy green, open spaces and sports.
WDC chief executive Mark Simpson said the new bridge will be raised when large vessels or yachts with tall masts need to pass through. Because the road surface sits 6m above the water level at high tide, many motorised vessels will be able to pass underneath without raising the bridge.
The project will be funded by the council and the New Zealand Transport Agency, each paying equal shares.
The design & build team is McConnell Dowell/Transfield JV as main contractor, Peters & Cheung (structural engineer), Knight Architects, Eadon Consulting (mechanical engineer), Speirs & Major Associates (lighting designer) and Northern Civil as highway engineer.
