Plans for the restoration of a suspension bridge in the Scottish Borders region of Scotland that dates back to the 1830s have been revealed.

Kalemouth Suspension Bridge, which is the work of naval officer Captain Samuel Brown (1776-1852), has been closed to vehicles since August 2020 after an inspection found decay in the deck. Before that, vehicles weighing under 3t were permitted to use the listed structure to cross the river Teviot.

Scottish Borders Council’s restoration will allow the bridge to be used by cyclists and pedestrians. The council has applied to replace the timber deck and the bridge’s parapets, including the horizontal steel bracing beneath the deck. The work will also include repairs and repainting of the metalwork and repairs to stonework on the wingwalls and abutments.

Captain Brown was also responsible for the Union Chain Bridge which lies on the border between England and Scotland (link opens in new tab).
