Plymouth Transport & Highways - a partnership between Plymouth City Council and Amey - proposes the restoration of the Laira railway bridge to form a new pedestrian and cycle link. The bridge opened in 1887 to carry rail over the River Plym in Devon and remained in use for 100 years.
The partnership is planning to bid for funding to improve walking, cycling and public transport links in the southern English city. Council cabinet members are being asked to approve a bid to the Department for Transport for a share of up to US$913 million being made available to councils through a fund for local sustainable transport.
The bid deadline is 18 April and the successful applicants are expected to be announced in late June. If the Plymouth Transport and Highways bid is successful, construction could begin as early as 2012.
