The study looked at potential solutions including establishing a new height of 65.5m in place of the current 46m to 47.5m. This could be done either by jacking up the existing 78-year-old span or building a new bridge. Another potential alternative involves building a tunnel linking Bayonne and Staten Island.

The Port Authority's planning to identify a preferred alternative will take approximately 18 months. The initiative will also produce a conceptual engineering study and a preliminary environmental analysis of alternatives.
