Highland Council in the north of Scotland has said that a wire-rope suspension bridge in Inverness will have to be closed during crowded events, even after short- and medium-term repairs.
Infirmary Bridge, a footbridge over the River Ness that dates to 1881, sustained damage to one of its hangers during a storm in early August. and has been closed ever since.
Substantial emergency repairs will take place by early November. More comprehensive work will be carried out in spring or summer 2026, including repairs to connections, repainting, drainage improvements and replacement of the timber deck and bracing. The total cost of the refurb is estimated at US$3.4 million
Highland Council has also announced completion of deck repairs to another listed wire-rope suspension bridge, Alexandra Bridge in Tain, which dates to 1902.
