The government of the west African nation of Sierra Leone has entered a major agreement with Atépa Group, and China Road and Bridge Construction (CRBC) for the ambitious Lunghi Bridge.

The US$1.5 billion project aims to improve access to Freetown and Lungi International Airport. The 8km bridge will cross the estuary of the Sierra Leone River. The journey presently takes three hours by road, or it can be made by boat.

Atépa Group is led by Senegalese architect Pierre Goudiaby Atépa. Bridge construction could start as early as December. Sierra Leone started the tender process for a bridge in 2019 with the aim of procuring a crossing that would pay for itself (link opens in new tab).
