Construction has started on a two-level bridge in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana that will serve as a destination as well as a river crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.

The City Municipality of Ljubljana’s contractor Strabag has started work on Muste Bridge. It crosses the Ljubljanica River in the east of the city, joining Štepanjsko naselje and Nove Fužine. The lower girder structure is complete, as is cable pre-stressing. Next up is the construction of a shallow load-bearing arch, which will act as a second level.

The deck will have active travel lanes either side, separating pedestrians and cyclists. The gently ramped arch from which the deck is suspended will offer additional viewpoints for pedestrians, while the space beneath the arch will be used for events or resting.

Also involved in the project, which includes a new pavilion and a public square on each side of the river, were Pipenbaher Engineers, Ponting, and Atelier Arhitekti.
