The work is for the East Bridge, which forms part of the 18km Great Belt Bridge linking the eastern and western parts of Denmark.
The East Bridge is one of the world’s longest suspension bridges and has a span of more than 1.6km. The road section is carried by two parallel cables, each approximately 3km long, 830mm in diameter and made from 18,648 strands of 5.38mm diameter.
Spencer has been appointed to carry out the project using its trademarked bridge access gantry system, the Cable Crawler. The Cable Crawler was designed and developed by Spencer specifically to give high-level access to main cables on suspension bridges. Spencer will wrap the main cables of the bridge in an elastomeric wrap known as Cableguard and install a demudification, which will run 24 hours a day for as long as the bridge stands.
The project follows the company’s work installing demudification on the Humber Bridge, Forth Road Bridge, M48 Severn Crossing and Alvsborg Bridge.
