The bridge collapse at Chamborigaud with emergency services in attendance (Sapeurs-pompiers du Gard)
The stone bridge over the river Leuch at Chamborigaud, Gard, in the south of France near Nimes collapsed late yesterday afternoon. The bridge gave way as a street sweeper truck was driving over. The vehicle fell 4m on to a bank under the bridge.
Firefighters attended and brought the driver to safety before confirming that the river was not polluted with fuel or the content of the sweeper’s tank.
The cause of the collapse is not yet known, but the region has suffered flood events in recent weeks.
