A replacement bridge over the Mississippi between Memphis, Tennessee, and West Memphis, Arkansas, has been named Kings’ Crossing after three ‘transformative’ figures.
The name of the new I-55 bridge refers to Dr Martin Luther King; BB King; and Elvis Presley, who is nicknamed ‘The King’. The project, by Tennessee Department of Transportation, is also referred to as ‘America’s River Crossing’
The current structure, a 75-year old cantilevered through-truss bridge, is being replaced with a new structure to meet seismic codes and to improve the region’s resilience.
Parsons Transportation Group is providing engineering and design services to the project; and Kewit was awarded the manager contract for the replacement earlier this year (link opens in new tab).
