Axion International has received an order from the US Army for the fabrication and installation of a thermoplastic composite I-beam tank bridge for a base at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. The plastic used will be entirely recycled.
The bridge will be required to support a 63.5t load. Axion worked with Rutgers University to develop composite plastics technology that uses 100% recycled plastic.
The company had built a bridge for the Army in Fort Leonard Wood in 1998 using its first-generation technology. It still looks like new nine years later, said Axion International chief executive officer Jim Kerstein.
