MMM's experience in designing and managing completion of 12 moving bridges was a factor in its appointment as owner's representative for the the US$58 million project to replace the ageing Johnston Street Bridge. "The bridge is a symbol of both form and function and requires a proven firm that is familiar with successfully delivering design-build projects and in particular moving bridges," said mayor Dean Fortin.

Seven residents will also play a role in advising on the project, with some having particular remits such as heritage and sustainability. "The citizen advisory committee will provide insight and advice on what will be one of the most important Victoria landmarks of this century - a signature project for BC's capital city," said Fortin. "Our community wants a bridge that is distinctive and fitting of Victoria's character, is safe and functional, and is sustainable for future generations."

A recent comprehensive assessment of the existing Johnson Street Bridge had identified extensive corrosion in its structural steel beams, obsolete mechanical and electrical systems and significant seismic vulnerability. The aim is to deliver its replacement by the end of March 2011.
