A busy highway bridge in northern Vietnam that collapsed during a storm in early September killing four people will be replaced during 2025 under an emergency construction directive from the country’s prime minister.
The new Phong Châu Bridge over the Red River will have a design and implementation plan that accounts for adverse weather and the flood season. It will have four lanes for traffic and the chosen design will align with the axis of the old bridge to minimise the need for new road connections.
Vietnam’s ministry of transport has required regular updates on the project, and it has directed authorities to work with the investor, the Thang Long Project Management Unit (PMU).
The old bridge was a 1995-built 380m steel truss structure with a capacity of 18t. The national road administration and the regional department of transport are removing the collapsed spans.
