The 1930s built Sappers Bridge over the river Afon Conwy near Betws y Coed Railway Station has been closed since late 2021 after a structural review. The significant issues involved the timber deck, the steel suspension cables and the towers and foundations (link opens in new tab).
The new design will be a 50m suspension bridge with two ornate towers. It will be wide enough for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as people using wheelchairs, prams and mobility scooters. Paths and footways serving the bridge will also be improved.
Work will take place in two phases, the first starting now and running to October this year. The second will be from April 2026 until summer 2026. The break is to accommodate the fish spawning season.
The contractor is MWT Civil Engineering, based in Colwyn Bay. The work was funded by the UK and Welsh governments.
