Construction has begun of a 'woven' pedestrian bridge that will connect athletic fields at the University of Pennsylvania in the USA with a new park that is being created.

The Weave Bridge is being built from steel, wood and polymers to a design by Arup's Cecil Balmond, with concept development and detailed design carried out by Ammann & Whitney. The bridge's form is described by the university as "weaved", with the stitching appearing to unravel as pedestrians reach each end.

The 58m-long structure's piers are now being built and the span is scheduled to arrive on site next month.
