The Welsh Government has closed a crucial bridge after engineers working beneath the structure found that bolts on key beams need replacing.

Initially, engineers called for a 3tonne weight limit on the Menai Bridge, which links the island of Anglesey to the mainland. But because of enforcement difficulties, the Welsh Government closed the bridge entirely to vehicles.

The recommendation came about after investigations during phase 2 of extensive renovation works. UK Highways A55, which operates and maintains the bridge on behalf of the Welsh Government, was getting ready to paint the underdeck, parapets and bearing access, repair concrete corbels, recalibrate the land saddle and upgrade lighting.

The Menai Bridge, which will mark its 200th anniversary in 2026, has been under renovation since a 2019 report called for work on the structure’s paint. Modelling before the start of that work identified more serious risks and the bridge was closed in October 2022 ahead of extensive work. A 7.5tonne vehicle weight limit has been in place at various times since then.

In November last year, contractor Spencer finished replacing the Menai Bridge's 208 wire rope hangers (link opens in new tab). Spencer has also recently fitted an access system (link opens in new tab).

Vehicles will use a second crossing, the Britannia Bridge, during the closure.
