The winners were chosen by an independent judging panel appointed by sponsors British Constructional Steelwork Association, Corus and the Steel Construction Institute. Awards also went to a department store, an office development and a shipbuilding facility. The Whittle Arch & Glass Bridge in Coventry received a commendation.
The award to Swansea Sail Bridge recognised the work of Wilkinson Eyre Architects, structural engineer Flint & Neill Partnership, steelwork contractor Rowecord Engineering, main contractor Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering and client Welsh Development Agency.
The bridge was described by the judges as 'a culmination of collaborative expertise and teamwork', with its architectural form, design and fabrication paying great attention to detail and creating an exciting, simplistic, but visually complex structure.
"The awards were launched to recognise the very best in the design and use of structural steel in construction, which all of these winners embody,' said judging panel chairman Professor Patrick Dowling. 'Engineering excellence, innovation, attention to detail, economy and speed of construction are characteristics of these exemplary structures."
