The proposed design has been put together by contractor Osborne and engineering consultancy Cass Hayward working with West Sussex County Council and a steering group comprising representatives of the local community. Osborne was named in December as having won the design and build contract, which is worth up to US$6.6 million.

“We are excited that we are getting to the stage when we can see what the new bridge might actually look like,” said Lionel Barnard, West Sussex County Council deputy leader with responsibility for highways and transport. “We want to involve local people and give everyone the chance to see for themselves, ask questions and give us their views.”

The new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists will replace the existing ageing structure, which was built in the 1920s.

Funding is coming from the county council and the Big Lottery Fund, which awarded charity Sustrans US$82 million to extend the UK’s cycle network.

Construction of the bridge is expected to start next year and be completed in spring 2013.
