A joint venture of Brayman Construction and Trumbull Construction has won the West Virginia Department of Transportation contract with a bid of US$224.4 million.

“It is an incredible project that is needed so badly,” said state governor Jim Justice. “It’s needed from the standpoint of congestion, but it’s also needed so badly from the standpoint of safety.”

The design is yet to be finalised but the intention is to build a new bridge over the Kanawha River, north of the existing bridge, to carry westbound I-64 traffic. The existing Legg Memorial Bridge will then be revamped and used to carry eastbound traffic.

Work on the project also extends beyond the Kanawha River, with additional widening and bridge replacements planned along a 6km section of the I-64.

The project is currently projected to be finished by October 2023.
