Arup and JDA Architects have won the competition to design a bridge over the River Douglas in Lancashire, north west England.

The bridge will link Hesketh Bank in West Lancashire and Much Hoole in South Ribble.

The design is for a stress ribbon bridge, which incorporates a supporting steel arch to reduce the effective span. The structure hangs via its deck, suspended from existing railway bridge embankments. The original railway bridge was an 85m-long structure that was demolished in the 1960s.

The parapet of the winning design consists of steel frames with a stressed wire infill.

Seven designs had been shortlisted in the competition, which was run by the Royal Institute of British Architects.
