The World Bank has approved financing for US$150 million to improve Nepal’s bridges.
The Third Bridges Improvement and Maintenance Program (BIMP-III) will improve resilience of the Himalayan nation’s bridges. Because of Nepal’s mountainous terrain, damage to infrastructure caused by seismic activity or extreme weather can cut off remote communities from essential services and disrupt healthcare and education in urban areas.
BIMP-III is led by Nepal’s Department of Roads and focuses on climate resilience. It will make use of enhanced designs and technologies including remote monitoring to protect bridges against extreme weather events.
