The Tasmanian state government has opened a replacement bridge on the island’s north-west coast.
The Cam River Bridge project is now officially complete, following a final inspection and the switch-on of traffic signals earlier this month.
The replacement bridge is higher than the old bridge to better withstand flooding that is expected as a result of more severe weather events associated with climate change. It stands on 22 concrete piles set 2m into rock below the river.
It also has wider lanes and shoulders to give more space for vehicles and cyclists; and it has a pedestrian pathway. The greater width will make it easier to keep traffic moving in the event of an accident on the bridge.
