An active travel bridge in Perth, Western Australia, has been closed this week after a lighting assembly fell from one of the cables.

Boorloo Bridge, a pair of cable-stayed pedestrian and cycle crossings either side of Heirisson Island, officially opened in December 2024 (link opens in new tab). The structure has 17,000 LED lights installed on its 64 steel cables, allowing for illuminated displays.

The bridge was closed this week while Main Roads Western Australia, the body that manages the state’s highway network, investigates and secures the lighting strips.
