The days are counting down before we finalise our print run for the Q3 #100 edition of Bridge design & engineering (Bd&e) magazine! Owing to global distribution issues caused by the coronavirus pandemic, printed copies will only be available to subscribers, advertisers and contributors.
Your special keepsake Centenary issue will feature the eagerly-awaited #BDE100choice poll results including:
- How the industry has changed over the last 25 years
- Your winning front cover choice
- Your winning article(s) to re-run and update (this is one very special surprise that we know you will love!)
- The top 100 bridges as voted for by Bd&e readers
plus a host of other great features including:
North America
Spotlight: Gordie Howe International Bridge project has been described as a once-in-a-lifetime project. At 853m, its main span will be the longest of any cable-stayed bridge in North America.
Sustainability
Exciting new research into digital design methods has yielded optimisation methods that use significantly less material, reducing the self weight of structures and allowing for lighter and longer spans.
Construction
A new Foster and Partners’ designed bridge is under way in the capital of Sweden. The 3,400t steel structure was manufactured in China to meet strict quality controls for the most aesthetically pleasing result.
Digital
Significant development efforts in the digital sphere are focussed on functionality extensions, such as live load analyses and design code checks. Read about some of the latest software extensions in Q3.
Materials
An integral, three-span network arch bridge under construction in Stuttgart will represent the first-time use of carbon tension members as hangers, providing an aesthetically pleasing and highly efficient structural system.
Asset management
Neglecting the accumulation of debris around bridge piers can have potentially catastrophic consequences. Showcased in Q3 are research efforts to assess scour at bridges with debris accumulation – an ever more important issue in the face of severe flooding events.
