A JV is celebrating the completion of a bascule bridge in The Bronx, New York City, USA.
Unionport Bridge, which takes the Bruckner Expressway over Westchester Creek, is a modern double-leaf bascule structure used by 60,000 vehicles a day. It replaces a bascule bridge that dated to 1953, and the new structure has a 75-year service life. Its advanced mechanical and electrical systems will ensure it lifts efficiently to keep marine and road traffic flowing. The pair of side-by-side spans will each carry three lanes of traffic and the bridge has a protected bike lane and a dedicated walkway.
Construction was phased so that traffic continued to move on road and water throughout.
The contractor was Unionport Constructors, a JV of Lane, the US subsidiary of Webuild, and SPC Construction. H&H was prime consultant, providing study, design and construction services. McLaren provided engineering services.
