The US$76.6 million Mohembo Bridge will begin on site in mid-2009, the Ministry of Works & Transport has confirmed. Design of the bridge had been due for completion in April this year, but consultations have delayed the project.

The cable-stayed design choice was informed by tourism and economic considerations, which are influenced by the Okavango swamps. The bridge has been positioned to provide the shortest possible route across the river.

It will replace a ferry that currently operates from 6.30am to 6.30pm. More than 650 pedestrians use the route every day and so the bridge will include walkways.
