Construction of a cable-stayed viaduct spanning east China's Qiantang River began yesterday. The Jia-Shao Bridge - short for Jiaxing-Shaoxing - will be 2,680m long, making it 200m longer than France's Millau Viaduct.
Six piers will support eight traffic lanes.
The bridge is at Hangzhou Bay in the Zhejiang Province and is also known as the No 2 Hangzhou Bay Bridge, following completion of the first bridge earlier this year. It will form a section of a national highway, linking Shenyang with Haikou.
The planned investment in the project is approximately US$2 billion. Completion is due in 2012.
