The eight schemes include both high-level fixed options and low-level opening designs for the canal bridge. Among the low-level options are bridges whose openings would be in tandem with the  existing A82 Tomnahurich canal bridge to ensure that one of these bridges wouldremain open to traffic at all times. Another approach would be for the road to follow a rising embankment leading to a high level bridge across the River Ness and Caledonian Canal.

URS Scott Wilson and Aecom have been working with Highland Council on the project.
