Proposals for an arch bridge designed by Parsons Brinckerhoff have been given the go-ahead by the development management committee of Devon County Council in south west England. The committee's approval means that planning permission can now be granted.

The US$6.9 million bridge will provide a route for pedestrians and cyclists across the M5 motorway, reinstating a right of way that was severed when the motorway was built in the 1970s.

The structure has been designed to create a dramatic gateway to Exeter and beyond. It takes the form of a bow-string arch, spanning 100m over the motorway and springing from footings located in the cutting. The deck will be suspended from the arch and there will be back spans onto the abutments.
