The existing 118-year-old bridge carries traffic over the Boston Inner Harbor between the North End and Charlestown. It consists of 10 granite stone masonry piers as well as a permanently fixed unreinforced concrete swing span pier, which are all to be removed. The 365m-long new bridge will have just six spans, giving an improved navigation channel. It will have five Y-shaped piers and a steel box girder design, with a cantilevered footpath.

North Washington Street Bridge

A temporary pedestrian and vehicle bridge will be built in order to maintain accessibility during the phased construction.

Preparatory activities including utility work are expected to begin this spring, with construction operations then starting in the autumn for completion in 2023.
