The project, which is being carried out by Joseph B Fay Company, includes deck replacement, ramp reconstruction, structural steel repairs, painting of the entire structure and concrete repairs. Signage improvements will also be made and a new overhead lane control system will be installed to allow the direction of traffic flows to be switched.

“This launches the major work to upgrade the Liberty Bridge we have been planning for many years,” said district executive Dan Cessna. “We appreciate everyone’s patience during this multiple phase effort.”

The steel cantilever bridge, which was opened in 1928, crosses the Monongahela River. Work is starting with the deck replacement, which will be carried out one lane at a time through four separate work phases over the course of approximately 160 consecutive days.

The overall project is due for completion in 2018.
