A committee made up of 10 officials from the US states of Kentucky and Indiana has chosen the types of bridges that will form two new crossings of the Ohio River. The US$240 million Downtown Bridge, designed by Michael Baker Jr, will be a three-tower cable stayed bridge (pictured). The low towers will be arranged in a simple harp formation and the cables will be attached outside the deck superstructure. The US$230 million East End Bridge, designed by Rosales Gottemoeller & Associates, will present a long, thin profile with two needle towers rising through the centre of the deck. Cables will extend diagonally from the towers and be attached to the centre of the deck. The overall bridges project is scheduled for completion by 2020.
