Work has begun on an anticipated cable-stayed bridge that will connect the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The 195m cable-stayed Narrow Water Bridge connects County Louth and County Down, providing a direct link between the Mourne Mountains and the Cooley Peninsula, two tourist destinations.

The bridge is designed for motor traffic as well as cyclists and pedestrians. The northern span will be a rolling bascule, opening to allow ships to pass through to the Newy Canal. It is funded by an allocation of US$111 million (plus VAT) from the shared Ireland fund.

The contractor for construction is BAM Ireland. ROD led the detailed design and management of the project, with support from Hardesty & Hanover on the moveable bridge and OBFA Architects and JN & G Traynor & Partners on the control building. Louth County Council is the lead project partner, managing planning consents, design details and the tender process.
