A landmark pedestrian bridge in London is getting a refurb to mark 25 years since its opening.
The City Bridge Foundation, which looks after five Thames crossings, is presently sifting through tender bids for a project to freshen up the Millennium Bridge. The work includes cleaning of the aluminium deck panels, and application of a non-slip coating. The programme will also include repainting metallic surfaces and a tightening of suspension cables.
A team of academics in 2021 announced an explanation for the swaying motion pedestrians experienced on the bridge’s opening day in 2000 (link opens in new tab). The sway was subsequently corrected with a dampening system.
