A design team of China Communications Construction Company and Louis Berger Group put in the lowest of six bids for a new bridge on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal. Its bid of US$4.6 million is less than half that of the highest bidder.
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is now evaluating the submission and will award the contract if the proposal meets all project needs.
ACP received six proposals from around the world for the design of the bridge. Currently, the Bridge of the Americas and the Centennial Bridge, both on the Pacific side, provide the only routes for vehicles to cross the canal.
The contract will cover the design of the concrete bridge together with access roads.

The new bridge will be the third across the canal and the first located near the Gatún Locks, spanning the west and east sides of the city of Colon.
