The 852-tonne (950-ton) span of the FIU-Sweetwater University City Bridge had been moved into place last weekend over Southwest Eight Street in a fast-track operation (link opens in new tab).

Local reports show the structure now lying across the road, with several vehicles crushed beneath it.
Senior FIU leaders have released a statement, saying: “We are shocked and saddened about the tragic events unfolding at the FIU-Sweetwater pedestrian bridge. At this time we are still involved in rescue efforts and gathering information. We are working closely with authorities and first responders on the scene. We will share updates as we have them.”
