The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario is using rapid replacement technology for the first time to remove and replace a pair of 600t bridges today during a 15 hour highway closure.
Each bridge is 28m long and four lanes wide. Self propelled modular transporters, already used in Europe and the USA, will be used to remove the existing bridges and move their replacements into place.
A rehabilitation of this size would take two years with lane reductions to complete using conventional construction methods according to the Ministry. This is the first of three planned contracts.
