The Czech rail administration Správa železnic has announced the designers of a new three-track bridge over the Vltava River at Výton in Prague.
The companies SUDOP Prague and TOP CON SERVIS won the tender with a bid worth US$5.3 million. The new three-track bridge replaces a century-old steel crossing used by 200 trains a day. A scheme to improve the city’s connectivity would see that increase to 500 trains a day.
The new bridge will have a lifespan of 100 years, and will have smaller maintenance costs than the old structure. It will also reduce noise and vibrations for nearby residents. The old bridge, meanwhile, will be converted into an active travel crossing. Construction will take place between 2026 and 2029.
The project came out of an international architectural competition (link opens in new tab) with the intention of creating a design that would not disrupt the visual integrity of the site, which is historically important. This competition was won by the company 2T Engineering.
